Innovative Isa Physio wins prestigious award for focus on “real work” rehabilitation

Mt Isa Physiotherapy has won a major “Health Provider Achievement Award” at the Q Comp Return to Work Conference, Expo and Awards, held in Brisbane last week.

Mt Isa Physio’s director David Rose said he and his team were excited by the award which provides state and national recognition for the practice’s benchmark approach to rehabilitation and preventative health. Our practice focuses on functional training and evidence-based physiotherapy to achieve optimal rehabilitation outcomes for miners and other “industrial athletes”.

“Foremost amongst our strategies to improve outcomes for injured workers,” he said, “has been the development of an onsite Work Hardening Centre in which rehabilitation of an injured worker can include real work activities using real mining equipment and tools.” This unique facility has also been highly successful in our preventative health initiatives including pre-employments and functional, risk-based manual tasks training.

Local industry and workers have responded positively to our rehab and preventative approach. “You don’t get this in the city!” is a common response.

Jordan Chapman, Mount Isa Physio’s Clinical Manager, believes there is a public perception that you have to travel to large cities to access best practice services. He said “this award is external recognition that Mt Isa has first class, rehabilitation! Perhaps workers from the city should be travelling to us!”

David and Jordan explain the key to Mt Isa Physio’s success as based upon a high level of training, expertise and experience. Our management team have master’s level qualifications (Ergonomics, Musculo-skeletal Physiotherapy). But it is a whole team approach that makes the difference, our practice culture includes:

  • Innovation and expertise where excellence is the goal every time
  • A solutions based “can do” approach
  • Individualized analysis and problem solving for every injured worker:
  • Maintenance of key partnerships: worker, case manager, rehab provider and employer
  • Thorough knowledge of job roles and re-creation of real work tasks
  • Open and timely communication within the rehabilitation partnerships

Workcover Queensland’s CEO Tony Hawkins recognised Mt Isa Physio’s award “This is an outstanding achievement and just reward for you and your organisation’s dedication and commitment to strengthening the Return to Work culture in Queensland. You and your colleagues are an excellent role model for other health providers and I am pleased you have been recognised for your efforts”.

Whilst accepting the award, David Rose recognised the contribution of these key partnerships to achieving outcomes, acknowledging Xstrata North Queensland rehabilitation’s team.

Dave Thomas (Superintendent – Health Risk Management) from Xstrata Health and Safety said …..

  • Xstrata Mount Isa Mines and Mount Isa Physio (MIPC) work in a collaborative manner with regard to the management of injured workers. Forming a holistic care team … we provide an injury management service that is timely, effective and sustainable.
  • As a self insured employer, we are vigilant regarding costs and benefits associated with local providers of health and injury management services. MIPC has been a partner in our treatment, management and assessment processes for some years with mutual benefits.
  • One of the major benefits of the relationship we have with MIPC is a mutual understanding of processes, services and clear and open communication channels.
